Introduction

This turned parts machining project was carried out by IDEA for a multinational corporation specializing in industrial automation equipment. The customer requested the production of over 500 precision mechanical components in a short timeframe. These cylindrical parts are commonly used in sliding modules, clamping systems, and drive mechanisms that require high accuracy and 100% interchangeability.

In addition to the large volume, the project demanded tight geometric tolerances, fine surface finishes, and strict quality control throughout the production process.

Challenges

  • High-volume production: Over 500 parts had to be machined and delivered within just 2 weeks.
  • Strict uniformity: All components needed to be identical to ensure full interchangeability.
  • Tight tolerances: Required dimensional accuracy of ±0.01mm for diameters, concentricity, and parallelism.
  • Surface finish: Ra ≤ 1.6 with no scratches or need for post-machining processing.

        1. Optimized CNC Turning and Production Planning

        • The team implemented automated CNC turning programs and ran continuous shifts to balance speed and quality.

            • 100% of the parts were inspected for critical geometries using micrometers, dial gauges, and visual inspection under reflective lighting.
            • Every 20th part was checked using a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to verify tolerance consistency.

            3. Automated Polishing and Corrosion Prevention

                • After turning, all components underwent mechanical polishing to ensure consistent brightness and smoothness.
